hair twists differently in

anticipation of the eternally

vain one who will paint

the curly field yellow.

Aging heart adjusts

her shift dress imagines

her skin sewn on the bias

at the waist behind ears

where her past now stretches

inward with her secrets.

Aesthetic not reconstructive

nostalgias move the heart toward

those beautiful sutures the ones

she carefully stitches with

her eyes as she gazes at her ages

past when intactness of beauty

repeated itself each spring with

starched crinolines crackling

against skin doubling the size

of skirts bouncing toward

a dreamed future now abandoned

in the cedar trunks of forgetting.

Sewn to itself by love’s

sharp needles the heart weeps.

Complicated constructions

watch inwardly as the

capillaries hum.

They shift places.

Bemoaning her past

resolve the heart slowly

undoes the tangled threads

that lie waiting in the sewing kit.

Want and its raw edges

beckons from her sex

as she works her way

up the bias cut. Twisting

the unfinished garment

she cries and as she touches

the cooling seams she is

overcome by tears

of sadness tears of joy.
